積み字

文字を積み木のように重ねて遊ぶ、体験型の作品です。紙の上に組まれた文字に重さはありませんが、板から切り出せば重さを持ち、その重さは字ごとに違います。積み字は、ふだん意識することのないその差を、積み上げながら確かめられるようにしました。

計量器の上に文字を重ねると、合計の重さを重量センサーがリアルタイムに取得し、数値と音に変換します。積み上がった姿、手のなかの重さ、鳴る音が同じ数を示し、視覚・触覚・聴覚が連動した体験になります。

積み木はレーザーカットしたMDFを2枚重ねて制作し、側面を黒く塗装して、積み上がったときに字形が読めるようにしました。ルールブックを必要としない体験を目指して計量器を削ぎ落とし、家族や友人と競い合えるよう、2台を並べられる什器を設計しています。

An installation for stacking letters like building blocks. A letter set on a page has no weight; cut from a board it has one, and that weight differs for every glyph. Tsumiji lets a player confirm a difference they never normally notice.

As letters are stacked on a scale, a load cell reads the running total in real time and converts it into a number and a tone, so that sight, touch and hearing all report the same figure.

The pieces are two layers of laser-cut MDF with the sides painted black so the letterforms stay legible once stacked. The scale was stripped down to need no rulebook, and two of them stand side by side so that people can compete.
