多摩美術大学創立90周年記念事業「EXPLOSION & EXPANSION」の一環として、学生と助手・副手の中から選抜された13名＋3チームのうちの1チームで制作しました。まちだシルクメロン地域共創デザインプロジェクトは、町田市の特産品「まちだシルクメロン」を題材にした、子ども向けの参加型インスタレーションと商品シリーズです。
まちだシルク農園を見学して栽培方法を取材すると、このメロンは地面に置かず、吊るして実らせることがわかりました。展示空間は農園の温室を会場に再現したもので、天井に薄い布を吊るし、その上に来場者がメロンに見立てた緑の風船を投げ入れて、頭上にメロンを実らせます。風船には来場者が絵を描き、会期の終わりには、200個以上が会場に浮かんでいました。
リサーチを元に、吊るして育てるという特徴を空に浮かぶメロンとして描いたキービジュアルをつくり、パッケージから什器まで、すべての媒体を子ども向けにデザインしています。パッケージは、陳列すると絵が繋がるようにつくりました。まちだシルクメロンの梱包は特定非営利活動法人プラナスクリエイティブセンターが担っていて、箱に詰めている方々がパッケージの絵も描いたらどうかと考え、大学に招待して共同制作ワークショップをひらきました。
This work was made as part of EXPLOSION & EXPANSION, the 90th-anniversary programme of Tama Art University, by one of three teams formed from thirteen students and assistants selected for the project. Machida Silk Melon Co-creation Project is a participatory installation and a product series for children, built around the Machida Silk Melon, a specialty of Machida City.
Visiting the Machida Silk Farm to research the cultivation, we learned that these melons are never laid on the ground: they ripen hanging in the air. The exhibition space recreates the farm's greenhouse, with thin fabric stretched below the ceiling; visitors throw green balloons standing in for melons up onto it, growing a harvest overhead. Visitors draw on the balloons themselves, and by the end of the run more than two hundred were afloat.
Based on that research, the key visual depicts the hanging cultivation as melons floating in the sky, and every medium, from the packaging to the fixtures, is designed for children. The packages are drawn so that the picture continues when they are lined up on a shelf. The melons are packed by the non-profit Prunus Creative Center; thinking the people who pack the boxes could also draw the pictures on them, we invited them to the university for a collaborative drawing workshop.
