はなさび

はなさびは、花を挿すと秒針が動きはじめ、抜くと止まる一輪挿しです。針が進むのは、花がそこにあるあいだだけです。

時計の針は本来、何があっても同じ速さで進み続けます。この針は花に従うので、文字盤が示すのは時刻ではなく、花とともに過ごした時間の積み重ねになります。新しい花を挿せば、そのぶんがまた足されていきます。

画面も通知も持たせていません。花を挿す、抜くという、ふだんの所作だけで動く設計にしました。

Hanasabi is a single-flower vase whose second hand starts when a flower is placed in it and stops when the flower is taken out. The hand moves only while a flower is there.

The hands of a clock ordinarily run at the same pace no matter what. Because this hand follows the flower, the dial shows not the time of day but the hours spent with flowers; place a new stem and the count simply carries on.

It has no screen and no notification. The only interface is the everyday gesture of placing and removing a flower.
