NaCl Variable Fontは、塩化ナトリウム型結晶の成長過程をモチーフとしたバリアブルフォントです。四角形と六角形を文字のアウトラインに沿ってランダムに生成し、拡大することで、視認性を保ちながら結晶が成長していく様子を表現しました。
立方体は、面を正面に向ければ正方形、体対角線を正面に向ければ正六角形、それ以外の角度では不定形の六角形に見えます。使う図形をこの三つに絞ったのは、塩が立方体で結晶するという事実に合わせるためです。
図形の成長量をそのままウェイト軸に割り当てているので、Ultra LightからHeavyまでの10ウェイトは、別々に描いた10書体ではなく、ひとつの結晶化の10の段階になります。macOS用の生成アプリケーションもつくり、A–Zを一括で生成してバリアブルフォントとして書き出せるようにしました。
NaCl Variable Font is a variable typeface based on the growth of sodium chloride crystals. Squares and hexagons are generated at random along the outline of a letter and enlarged, so that the crystal appears to grow while the letter stays legible.
A cube reads as a square face-on, as a regular hexagon down its body diagonal, and as an irregular hexagon at any other angle; the vocabulary was limited to these three because salt crystallises as a cube.
The amount of growth is assigned directly to the weight axis, so the ten weights from Ultra Light to Heavy are not ten separate drawings but ten stages of one crystallisation. A macOS application generates the whole alphabet at once and exports it as a variable font.
